How the BARK Range Splits

The B-series boats are rowing boats with a slatted floor and a pair of oars in the box. In BARK's model codes, N marks a hinged transom that takes a motor up to 2.5 hp, and P adds a rub rail with a spray deflector along the tubes. The B-240CD doesn't have a transom at all. At 19 to 25 kg (42 to 55 lb) in a single bag, these are the BARK boats one person can carry to the water.

The BT-270D is the smallest BARK with a fixed transom: two people, a 5 hp rating and 26 kg (57 lb) packed. It doesn't have a keel, so under power it holds a straight line less well than the keel boats do.

Every model with an S in the code has an inflatable keel and a rigid sectional floor, which keeps the boat tracking straight under power, and BARK lists the BT-290SD through the BN-360S as able to get up on plane. They run from the two-person BT-290SD at 10 hp to the BT-450S, which carries seven people on a 30 hp motor.

The trade-off is weight and set-up time. A keel boat ships in two bags, one for the hull and one for the floor: 33 kg and 25 kg (73 lb and 55 lb) for the BT-330S, 50 kg and 32 kg (110 lb and 71 lb) for the BT-450S. Putting a sectional floor together takes longer than unrolling a slatted rowing boat, and at those weights it's a two-person carry.

Construction

BARK laminates its plywood floors with an anti-slip film, on the slatted rowing floors and the rigid keel-boat floors alike. Motor boats with a fixed transom carry protective strips along the bottom for dragging the boat ashore or loading it on a trailer. Every boat comes with a foot pump, a pair of oars and a repair kit.

Choosing a Motor for a BARK Boat

The transom rating in the table is a ceiling, and the motor that suits a boat often sits below it. On the 2.5 hp rowing boats, a small electric outboard adds very little weight and keeps the boat usable on waters with engine restrictions. The keel boats take 10 to 30 hp depending on the model, and M-Oceans sells both electric and gas outboards for them.

One Canadian rule to plan around: once the motors on a boat total 10 hp (7.5 kW) or more, Transport Canada requires a Pleasure Craft Licence. That covers every BARK here from the BT-290SD up, if you fit the full rated motor.

What are BARK inflatable boats made of?

BARK builds the tubes from Korean PVC and the bottom from a 1,100 g/m² German PVC fabric, with the tube fabric weight chosen per model. The rowing boats divide the tubes into two air chambers. The keel motor boats have three, or five on the BN-390S and BT-450S, with the inflatable keel as one more. If one chamber is punctured, the others keep holding air.
