Reading the Specs: Ah, Wh and What Matters in a Canadian Season

Two packs in this collection can look impossible to compare because manufacturers label them differently. One is rated 200 Ah; the next is 13,600 Wh, and they describe the same property in different units. Divide watt-hours by nominal voltage to get amp-hours: 13,600 Wh at 51.2 volts works out to roughly 266 Ah. Use watt-hours when you are estimating runtime against a motor’s power draw, and amp-hours when you are sizing cable and fusing.

Temperature is the second question, and in Canada it is the one that costs people money. LiFePO4 discharges in the cold without complaint, but charging a pack below freezing damages the cells, and a decent battery management system will refuse to try. For a boat that stays in the water into November or a cottage bank that sees a full winter, a self-heating pack solves this at the cell level instead of asking you to heat the locker. Several Epoch batteries in this collection are built that way, and some add Bluetooth monitoring or Victron communication if the boat already runs a Victron system.

Will a 48V lithium battery survive a Canadian winter?

Stored properly, yes. Bring removable packs indoors at haul-out and leave them at roughly half charge rather than full. Fixed banks that stay aboard need either a heated space or a self-heating battery, since the risk is not the cold itself but charging while the cells are below freezing.
