Here is the entire annual maintenance schedule for an electric outboard: rinse it, look it over, and put the battery away at the right charge. Most of it happens on one afternoon in October. That brevity is real, and it is one of the reasons people leave gas behind in the first place.
There is a catch, though. Skip the battery part of that afternoon, and you can lose the most expensive component on the transom without ever hearing a warning sound. So this guide spends most of its time on the battery – what charge to store it at, and where it should sit through five months of Ontario cold. The brand-by-brand figures are further down.
The Real Winter Risk Is Deep Discharge
A gas motor stored badly cracks a block or gums a carburetor. An electric outboard stored badly does something less dramatic and just as expensive: the battery drains itself to death.
Every lithium pack loses a small percentage of charge each month while sitting idle – the battery management system stays awake, and the chemistry self-discharges on top of that. Park a battery in November at 15% and by March it can slip below the cut-off voltage where a normal charger will no longer accept it. Service centres can sometimes recover large banks cell by cell. Portable packs in the 3-hp class usually cannot be saved, and a replacement costs more than most gas winterization bills add up to in a decade.
The fix costs nothing. Store the pack at the right charge level, somewhere it will not freeze solid, and glance at it once or twice over the winter. That is the core of this whole guide. Step-by-Step: The October Afternoon
Step 1. Rinse and Dry the Motor
After the last run of the season, rinse the motor down with freshwater from the tiller to the prop. This matters most after saltwater use, since salt crystals keep pulling moisture onto seals and connectors long after the boat is dry. Stick to gentle hose pressure and a cloth. Pressure washers force water past seals, and a seal that let water in during October will show you rust in April.
Dry the motor fully, and pay attention to the power connector. Moisture trapped in a capped connector for five months is how corrosion starts.
Step 2. Inspect and Grease
Pull the propeller and check the shaft for fishing line – it cuts seals slowly and invisibly. Inspect the prop for dings, check the sacrificial anode, and replace it if it is more than half gone. Then apply a light coat of marine grease to the shaft before reinstalling.
Finish by applying a thin layer of dielectric grease to the battery terminals and the motor-side connector pins. Thirty seconds of work, and springtime corrosion stops being a topic.
Step 3. Set the Battery to Its Storage Charge
Full is the wrong storage level, and so is empty. Lithium cells age fastest at the top of their range, so a pack left at 100% all winter comes out of storage measurably older than it needs to be. Near-empty is worse, for the deep-discharge reasons covered above. Manufacturers ask for something in the middle – ePropulsion, for example, wants the 1,539 Wh pack on the Spirit 2 parked at about 60%. Run the motor or the charger until you reach the point your manual says to, then write the number on a strip of masking tape on the case. January-you will appreciate it.
Step 4. Choose Where the Battery Spends the Winter
Where the battery spends the winter matters more in Canada than in the countries where most of these manuals get written. A detached garage in Ontario or on the Prairies can hold –20°C (–4°F) for weeks, and sustained cold at that level degrades the electrolyte even in packs rated for winter use. So the battery comes into the house. Ours winter on a basement shelf next to the paint cans; a heated garage or a spare closet does the same job.
Cottage boats deserve a special mention here, because the battery tends to get closed up in October with everything else. Do not leave it there. It fits in the trunk, and it is the one part of the boat that genuinely cannot handle a Muskoka winter unattended. One more small thing: a battery stored directly on a concrete floor loses heat into the slab all season, so put a board or a rubber mat under it.
Step 5. Never Charge a Cold Battery
Charging lithium below freezing causes permanent internal damage, which is why the BMS in a quality pack refuses to charge until the cells warm up. If a battery has been in the cold, bring it inside and let it sit at room temperature overnight before plugging it in. Most people trip over this rule in April rather than December – the first warm Saturday arrives, the charger comes out, and the pack is still at garage temperature. Wait the extra day.
For boats that keep larger banks aboard through winter – conversions and cottage boats on external 48 V systems – there are two ways around the problem: an insulated battery box, or self-heating LiFePO4 models that warm their own cells before accepting a charge. Step 6. Store the Motor and Set Two Reminders
The motor is the easy part of winter storage. Put it upright, or in whatever position your manual shows, cap the connector, and cover it with fabric rather than plastic so condensation can escape. An unheated space is fine for the motor on its own – there is no cooling water inside it to freeze.
Before you close the garage door, set two phone reminders – one for January, one for March. When each goes off, check the battery's charge level; if it has drifted well below the storage target, warm the pack indoors and top it back up. Each check takes a couple of minutes. The spread in those numbers has a boring explanation. LiFePO4 banks and the lithium-ion packs inside portable outboards have slightly different comfort zones, and some manufacturers pad their recommendations more than others to allow for self-discharge between check-ins. In practice, you will not go wrong storing any of them at roughly half charge in a room you would be comfortable sitting in.
Spring Recommissioning
Recommissioning barely deserves its own heading. Bring the battery to room temperature, charge it to full, and while it charges, open the manufacturer app and install any firmware that arrived over the winter. Reinstall the prop if it came off in the fall, take one look at the connectors, and mount the motor. Budget an hour, most of it spent waiting on the charger.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do electric outboard motors need winterizing at all?
Yes, but the job is small. There is no fuel system, cooling circuit, or oil to service – winterization comes down to cleaning the motor, greasing contact points, and storing the battery at a partial charge in a spot that stays above freezing.
What charge level should I store a lithium outboard battery at?
About half, give or take. ePropulsion puts Spirit packs at 60%, and most LiFePO4 makers say 50%; the gap between those two is not worth losing sleep over. What actually damages batteries is wintering at either end of the scale. Full packs wear their cells down for nothing. A pack parked near empty can self-discharge past the point of recovery before anyone looks at it again. Your manual has the exact number for your battery.
Can I leave the battery in an unheated garage over winter?
Not in most of Canada. Weeks below –20°C degrade the cells even when the battery is not being used. Bring the pack indoors to a basement or heated space, and put a wooden board under it if it sits on concrete.
Can I charge the battery in the cold?
No. Charging lithium cells below freezing permanently damages them, and most battery management systems will block charging until the pack warms up. Bring a cold battery to room temperature overnight before connecting the charger.
Do I need antifreeze or fogging oil for an electric outboard?
No. There are no water passages in the drivetrain to protect and no cylinders to fog. The corrosion protection an electric motor needs is a freshwater rinse, drying connectors, and a little dielectric grease.
