12V LiFePO4 Batteries – The Most Versatile Starting Point
A 12V LiFePO4 battery is the most common upgrade path from lead-acid – and for good reason. It's a direct replacement for Group 24, 27, and 31 batteries, which means you can swap one in without rewiring your boat, RV, or solar system. At roughly 25 lbs for a 100Ah unit (compared to 60–70 lbs for lead-acid), the weight savings alone change how a small boat handles or how much payload your RV carries.
Most of our 12V LiFePO4 batteries include Bluetooth monitoring and built-in heating for Canadian conditions. If your setup demands more than 12V, some models can be wired two in series for a 24V bank or four for 48V – but only where the manufacturer states the battery supports series connection, since not every BMS tolerates it. Purpose-built 24V and 48V batteries are usually the cleaner solution for larger systems anyway.
24V LiFePO4 Batteries
24V systems bridge the gap between 12V portability and 48V high-power. You'll find them in larger trolling motor setups (Minn Kota 24V), mid-size RV house banks, and commercial marine applications. You can build a 24V bank from two 12V batteries in series, or go with a purpose-built 24V unit for simpler wiring and integrated BMS protection.
Our most popular 24V options: the Epoch 24V 100Ah for mid-range setups, the Epoch 24V 230Ah Elite V2 for large-capacity systems with Victron communication, and the ReLiON RB24V100 for professional marine installations. See the full 24V battery range.
36V LiFePO4 Batteries
36V is trolling motor territory. Bow-mount motors above roughly 100 lbs of thrust run on 36V, which traditionally meant three lead-acid batteries in series, three sets of terminals to corrode and around 180 lbs sitting in the bow of a boat that would rather not carry it.
A single 36V LiFePO4 pack replaces all three. One battery, one set of connections, roughly a third of the weight, and because lithium holds voltage nearly flat through the discharge curve the motor pulls the same thrust at the end of the day as it did at launch. That last part is what anglers notice first. The Epoch 36V 100Ah with heating and Bluetooth is the pack most Ontario boats end up with. See the full 36V battery range.
48V LiFePO4 Batteries
48V is where the largest part of this collection sits, and where serious electric propulsion lives. Above roughly 3 kW almost every system is built on it, for one reason: at the same power a 48V bank draws a quarter of the current of a 12V one. Quarter the current means thinner cable, smaller fuses, less voltage drop across a long run and far less heat in the lockers.
The range spans dedicated propulsion packs and general house banks. RIM Drive and WaterWorld batteries are rated in watt-hours rather than amp-hours, so divide by the nominal 51.2 volts when you want to compare them against an Ah-rated pack. ePropulsion's E60 and E163 are matched to their own motors and communicate with them. The Epoch 48V 100Ah V2 Elite adds cell heating, Bluetooth and Victron communication, which matters if the boat or cabin already runs a Victron system.
A modular option is coming as well. The kMax 48V battery holds 1,024 Wh in an 11 kg portable pack with an IP67 rating, and up to four run in parallel for just over 4 kWh. It is built for kayak propulsion rather than fixed installation, and ePropulsion expects it in spring 2027. Browse everything at this voltage in the 48V battery collection.
Why LiFePO4 Is Replacing Lead-Acid
Lithium iron phosphate isn't new – it's been the chemistry of choice for marine, RV, and off-grid applications for over a decade. Here's what the numbers actually look like.
-
50% Lighter
A 100Ah LiFePO4 weighs 25 lbs. The lead-acid equivalent? 65 lbs. On a boat, that matters.
-
2X Usable Capacity
Lead-acid should only be discharged to 50%. LiFePO4 gives you 80–100%. A 100Ah lithium outperforms a 200Ah lead-acid.
-
10X Cycle Life
3,500–5,000+ cycles vs. 300–500. Replace once a decade instead of every two seasons.
-
4X Faster Charging
Accepts charge at higher rates with no absorption taper. Shorter generator run times, faster solar recovery.
-
BMS (Built-In Protection)
Every LiFePO4 battery includes a battery management system – overcharge, over-discharge, short circuit, and thermal protection built in.
LiFePO4 Batteries for Canadian Winters
If you're buying LiFePO4 batteries in Canada, cold weather isn't an afterthought – it's the primary design constraint. Here's what you need to know: LiFePO4 cells discharge fine in cold temperatures, even below -20°C. The problem is charging. Pushing current into a lithium cell below 0°C risks lithium plating on the anode, which permanently damages the battery.
That's why we stock self-heating LiFePO4 batteries from Epoch and ReLiOn. These units have internal heaters that activate automatically when cell temperature drops below a set threshold – typically around 0°C to 5°C. The heater draws a small amount of energy from the battery itself (or from a connected charging source) to warm the cells before accepting charge. It's not a gimmick – it's the difference between a battery that lasts 10 years and one that's degraded after two Canadian winters.
Victron-compatible batteries take it a step further. The Epoch Elite V2 series, for example, communicates cell temperature directly to Victron charge controllers and inverter/chargers. The charger won't push current until the cells are warm enough. That's system-level protection you don't get with budget brands.
